SPECIAL REPORTS |
|
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to
purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor
Safety."
- Benjamin Franklin, 1755 |
|
As members of the press, and as Asian Americans a part of
America's immigrant community unjustly demonized since 9/11, of
utmost importance is maintaining the most basic premises this
country was founded on. Among them freedom of the press is one,
checks and balances to maintain democracy another, all falling
under that claim we make to the world that we are a nation ruled
by laws. Since 9/11 our laws have been broken and our rights
trampled. Many blindly believed the lies our government told. Yet
it is our own government that has stolen more of our freedoms than
any terrorists have. We need to change the direction the Executive
Branch is trying to take us. It is time for the press to not be
like The New York Times and keep hidden for a year a
President breaking the law. It is time to make the Attorney
General uphold the Constitution as he swore to do. It is time to
insure that the next Supreme Court justice is not someone who
believes in a supreme Presidency, superior to Congress or the
Courts. It is time for Americans to keep America free. |

Bush Used NSA to Spy on Americans Illegally - Marcel Votlucka,
SB Press
"It's clear that this administration has engaged every possible
agency, from the Pentagon to NSA to the FBI, to engage in spying
on Americans." - ACLU |

Congressional Research Service Report: Dubious Legal Basis for
Spying "may represent an exercise of
presidential power at its lowest ebb," - "does not seem to be as
well-grounded" |

O
Besides Bush Ordering NSA to Illegally Spy on Americans, FBI Routinely Spied on American Mosques
“could lead to the perception that we
are no longer a nation ruled by law, but instead one in which fear
trumps constitutional rights. All Americans should be concerned
about the apparent trend toward a two-tiered system of justice,
with full rights for most citizens, and another diminished set of
rights for Muslims.” - CAIR |

Is this to be a nation of laws or of men? -Nick Turse,

Why Microsoft Censorship in China Matters to Everybody
- Rebecca MacKinnon, RConversation
"If these American technology companies have so few
moral qualms about giving in to Chinese government demands... can
we be sure they won't do the same thing in response to potentially
illegal demands by an over-zealous government agency in our own
country?" |
|
IS TORTURE LEGAL?
Congress NO v. President YES |
 |
|
Yale Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh |
|
|
Instead of investigating illegal torture, Gonzalez is
investigating who leaked the truth about that torture. Is he
protecting a man, the President, or the law, the Constitution he
swore to uphold?
Koh's prescient testimony is on the mark.
