Shanghai Summer Photo Album : Shaoxing
The cast:
So last weekend I went to a place called Shaoxing...
it took 3-4 hours to get there
by train and it's famous for its "East Lake." Here's what
happened...
[9:48:04 AM] SL says: basically, some guy
stole my cell phone
[9:48:23 AM] SL says: and I sent false text messages (Law and Order style) to my phone from someone else's cell phone [9:48:26 AM] SL says: guy got scared [9:48:47 AM] SL says: and I got to ride in a police car with flashing lights (no sirens though) [9:48:59 AM] SL says: ...to get my phone back from the guy who said he 'found' it
...it was right in front of me for the
longest time
I was sitting in the lobby of the JinJiang Inn with Huy, Fang, and Peng and I was looking at my cell phone I put it on the arm rest I thought I put it in my pocket then we leave to go sightseeing and.... cell isn't in my pocket
and I have only walked 100 feet from hotel
lobby doors....
we go back to the hotel, Huy checks his bag for the phone I check mine nothing Fang calls the phone it's powered off since text messages eventually go through when the phone is turned on, I sent one text message to it with Fang's phone, and then Fang gets a call from my phone she gives me the phone I'm like "no! I don't speak Chinese!" then the guy hangs up after 4-5 seconds
I sent 3 texts to it,
two from a phone that I had in my phonebook [Fang], so they
knew it was a girl's name
the first two came from her phone then I was like grrr so I sent one from a different phone [Fang's friend] that would show only the phone number and then the guy called
the hotel checked the
security cameras and they showed nothing....
so my three texts were: my first text was "The hotel has a video record of you. Please return the phone." no reply, tried calling the phone, it was powered off then I sent "three hours only. 88." (8 in Chinese is "ba"... so 88 is short hand for bye-bye) then I waited a few mins, realized that I was sending from a phone number that was already in my phonebook then I thought "roar, need a diff cell phone so they only see the number and maybe they'll think its a police person" so I sent the third which was "less than 3 hours. Return now." the police officer shows up, then 5-6 minutes later, the guy who had my phone calls the first text number
Fang sees her phone ringing while she and I
are in some room with the police officer who's taking down
my passport number and other info. so she says 'oh its your
phone!' and hands it to me. me 'I don't speak Chinese!
please talk to them for me!' and she does. then I'm like
"give it to the police officer" and she did. he talks to the
guy and all I understood was something to the effect of "I'm
a police officer... who are you... u have it... where are
you/where to meet?"
so yeah... while Huy and Peng waited at the hotel, Fang, me, and police officer drove in the cop car to some location about 2 miles from the hotel where a little kid (maybe 10-12 years old) and his dad (I'm guessing) give me the phone police officer says something in Chinese to the guy, all I understood was "this is a foreigner.. it's his phone" cop let them go... Fang said she remembers seeing that guy at the hotel she said they only said they "found it" but didn't say where they found it the phone was in French language mode...
