SBU alumna Christine Pechera was saved by a bone marrow donor in November 2006.

With just a simple cotton swab of your cheek, YOU can become a registered bone marrow donor to save someone else's life.

Don't Miss the Chance!

Valentine's Day - 2/14 - SAC Lobby - Noon

by Kenley Gagan

Last semester during one of our PUSO (Philippine United Student Organization) meetings, Phillip Cso came by to talk to us about an important issue. The topic was on bone marrow diseases. I was listening to the discussion and wondered what this had to do with anything Filipino related. It turned out that the person he was talking about is a Stony Brook alumna, Christine Pechera, a Filipina.

We watched a small clip on the process she had to go through to find a match to cure her. I found it rather difficult to watch because it was very painful to see her in such emotional distress. You can still see it on YouTube and you should definitely watch it! See the links below.

Finding a match is very difficult, ESPECIALLY for Asian Americans - ALL Asian Americans, not just Filipinos. Only 6.5% of Asian Americans are registered. But to participate is PAINLESS. All it requires is your cheek to be swabbed with a Q-tip.

To help those with bone marrow diseases PUSO is sponsoring a

After a long, long search a match for Christine was finally found. After more than a semester in a hospital, in November 2006 she was released and hopefully is now cancer-free. Please save others from the agonizing wait, and worse, slow and painful death if a match is never found. http://www.savechristine.com/
