FROM ECAASU TO CNN
AAJA TO SBU'S JOURNALISM
ASIAN AMERICANS IN THE MEDIA

With this issue the SBU AA E-Zine starts on a new path. There is a new Editor-in Chief, Tommy Yu. He is a gifted writer and the first journalism major for the Zine. You can read about him in an interview with David Lu, and see how talented he is as a writer with his Op Ed on how Asian Americans are seen in the media and what they need to do about it.

Tommy is replacing Yina Chun who has moved over to be Editor-in-Chief of AAJ, the Asian American Journal. As an English major, AAJ is where Yina's heart lies.

This series on Asian Americans in the Media is both self-contained and continuing. It began with students going to the ECAASU conference, many to one of those types of conferences for the first time, and coming back with a sense of purpose to do more than just program fun events. ASA did a workshop on "What Does It Mean to Be Asian American?" and many felt the discussions were the best they had ever had at SBU. At the same time is when the CNN interview occurred that starts Tommy's Op Ed. They joined in the chorus asking CNN to look at itself and its treatment of Asian Americans.

So beginning with this issue, Asian Americans in the media will be a part of each issue. The Zine will highlight a member of AAJA so that all readers can get a feel for what Asian Americans are doing in the field, even though their faces on the boob tube are few and far between.

SBU has started a new School of Journalism and its Advisory Board is reflective of those same few Asian American faces that are seen in the real world outside of our ivory tower. Actually less. As of this writing that Board contains but one Asian American - and there are no Asian American faculty.

Hopefully, more Asian Americans will voice their feelings about how they are portrayed, and as more Asian Americans become involved in the media, the CNN type fiascos will no longer happen.
