2008—Stony
Brook
University
has been
ranked
among
the top
100
national
universities
in
America
and
among
the top
50
public
national
universities
in the
country
in the
annual
U.S.
News &
World
Report
survey
released
today.
The
survey
marks
the
seventh
time in
four
years
that
Stony
Brook
has
received
either
worldwide
or
national
recognition
in such
a poll.
The
University
is
ranked
tied for
96th in
the U.S.
News
rating
of “best
national
universities,”
which
the
magazine
defines
as
universities
that
“offer a
wide
range of
undergraduate
majors
as well
as
master’s
and
doctoral
degrees,
many
strongly
emphasize
research.”
Stony
Brook
ranked
tied for
45th in
the
category
of top
public
national
universities.
Stony
Brook is
the only
university
or
college
on Long
Island
that
made the
list of
the Top
100. The
survey,
which
appears
in the
current
edition
of U.S.
News, is
based on
15
indicators
of
academic
quality
gathered
from
each
institution.
“Stony
Brook
University
is an

University.

known
faculty

the
lives of
students
from all
over the
globe
and our
researchers
pioneer
discoveries

the

the

rankings—all

them—are
a
tribute
to the
terrific
work our
people
do, and
to the
quality
of
faculty
and
students
we
attract.”
Stony
Brook’s
engineering
program
was also
selected
as one
of the
nation’s
best,
ranking
in a tie
for 61st
for
universities
whose
highest
degree
offered
is a
doctorate.
Within
the last
four
years,
Stony
Brook
has also
been
ranked
the
136th
best
university
in the
world by
the
London
Times
Higher
Education
Supplement,
and in
the top
50 in
North
America;
ranked
10th
among
U.S.
public
universities
by the
Times;
and
ranked
among
the top
150
universities
in the
world by
the
Institute
for
Higher
Education
in
Shanghai.
