Each year the Indian
Graduate Students Association holds a welcome party for all
the new Indian graduate students on campus to meet each
other and the returning students. On September 14th the SAC
Ballroom was packed as students came out for a night of good
food and entertainment.
IGSA President
Dhananjay Deshpande opened the evening (and later
performed too!) and Soumen Bandyopadhyay and Sneha
Ramachandran were the MC's for the night.
Dr. Ajay Gupta, (left in photo), IGSA's advisor, introduced
the honoured guests. They included
Prof. S.N. Sridhar, founder of the
Center for India Studies and the first Chair of the
Department of Asian and Asian American Studies;
Ashok
Vyas, (front in photo with his son), Program Director of
ITV; and
Raj Mehta, founder and CEO of
Infosys International, one of Long Island's award
winning software companies. Raj brought three students to the stage
as his props while he had the audience laughing loudly with
the jokes and games he played with them.
Then came dancing and singing by many of the talented
members of IGSA. Even physicists can have great voices and
computer scientists can dance!
The aroma of Curry Club filled the room for an hour while
the show went on, building up everyone's appetites. Curry
Club was the first Indian restaurant to open locally and has
always been supportive of student events. After the
entertainment was over everyone dug in to some great food.
In addition to Deshpande, the IGSA Cabinet who worked so
hard and so well to make the event a success were Prema
Kanakia, VP, Janit Ahluwalia, Treasurer, and
Executive Board members Prakash Ahuja, Rohit Raman,
Sejal Magia, Avanthi Gupta, and Kavya
Palakruti.
