The best selling New York Time's book,
Stuff
White People Like, is a long list the author views as
definitely white things. It's a little sexist since #11 is
only about white males, but there has been some consternation
in the Asian male community that the white world views their
women as hot but they are not.
In the male dominated Zine office, this plays out in many
ways. Editor Ngoc Vu sometimes sits there shaking her head
saying, "Why am I the only woman here today?" when the
conversation turns to "perky breasts" (don't ask!) and
female comparisons are brought up with erotic online photos. "She's
Oliver's type. She looks like a model but she's brain dead."
On one side of the spectrum is the staff person who wanted
to produce a calendar of biracial couples - all hot Asian
men with an assortment of women - divided between Whites,
Blacks, Latinas, and Asians. Obsessed with the subject of
white guys and Asian girls, many secretly assume he was
spurned by some white chick and hasn't gotten over it.
On the other extreme, another staff person, definitely with
a small ego, thinks he is so hot he should be one the
calendar months, preferably February, the month of love.
In between are those in mono-cultural or bi-Asian
relationships who just don't understand what the fuss is all
about since they've never had a problem finding a mate - to
those who haven't dated yet because it will freak their
parents out - or those who are dating and whether its the
same ethnicity or not haven't told their parents who will
freak out - to those who have dated plenty and think the
issue isn't race but how American or how Asian someone is. When
it comes to dating and relationships, stereotypes don't seem
to exist anymore.
Following are a series of articles spanning the spectrum -
starting with Jack Xiang's who doesn't understand why the
recent changes but glad they are happening.
