Interviewer: So how long you two been going out?
GF:
About a year
BF: Yea,
about a year and two months.
Interviewer: Are both of you freshmen?
Both:
Yes
Interviewer: You went to high school together?
BF: Yes
Interviewer: Which high school if you don’t mind me asking?
Both:
Brooklyn Tech
Interviewer: Were both of you born here?
GF: Yeah
BF: Well, I was born in England.
Interviewer: Are you guys’ first generation Americans?
Both: Yeah
Interviewer: How did you guys find each other?
BF: We
kind of knew each other sophomore year, but we kind of lost
contact junior year, but senior year I had a friend who knew
each other and I started talking to her again. So we had
physics together so we started talking to each other during
that class.
Interviewer: So you’ve known each other for 3 years now?
BF: Yea,
between the year that we started knowing each other and the
year we started going out, we had basically no contact. And
we only knew each other through mutual friends.
Interviewer: Was there any peer pressure when you were first
dating because you’re Filipina (GF) and you’re Indian (BF)?
GF: Not really, we kind of tried to get away from that. We
kind of had mixed friends because in our high school; it’s
just very mixed.
BF: Yea, very diverse.
Interviewer: Did you guys have any trouble relating to each
other because of the different cultures?
BF:
Actually I thought it was pretty cool that we have two
different cultures because I would get to experience the
culture she has and she gets the experience the culture I
have because she’s Filipino and I never got to see that kind
of culture before. And then having her bring me to Filipino
restaurants trying the different foods - it was an
experience.
GF:
Yeah, same with me because I always admired the Indian
culture and I found my favorite food is Indian food. So when
his mom cooks authentic Indian food, I'm always very happy.
Interviewer: Do you have these mutual values about sharing
cultures because there are discrepancies between your two
different cultures?
GF:
Yeah, we surprise ourselves because we have very similar
practices because we always seem to be saying “Oh, I have
that too in my culture.”
BF:
Yeah, we always seemed to be able or try to compromise. Find
the mean between the two.
Interviewer: Is there anything else that you guys would like
to add?
BF: My Indian culture hasn’t really hindered the
relationship at all and actually it has helped it. We get
new experiences and you only appreciate the other person so
much more.
