The Christopher Samaria Memorial Scholarship
was established in 2005, in honor of Christopher Samaria, an
undergraduate student recognized for his outstanding
academic ability and exceptional leadership skills.
Christopher lost his life in a tragic automobile accident in
2005. The Christopher Samaria Memorial Scholarship has been
created in his name to acknowledge exceptional undergraduate
students who excel in their studies while actively
advocating for the South Asian community; display their
interest and commitment by participating, organizing and
coordinating a variety of extracurricular and community
outreach or organizing activities; demonstrate leadership
qualities and make contributions to diversity related
programs on the Stony Brook University campus or in their
local communities. Outstanding freshmen, sophomores or
juniors with majors in the College of Arts and Sciences,
interested in pursuing a career in the medical profession
are encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet the above
criteria and must demonstrate financial need, have a minimum
GPA 3.0 and have full-time status the year the award is
given. Preference in selecting the recipient will be given
to those who provide service to the South Asian community on
the Stony Brook campus.
Shi Ming Hu Awards

There are three $500 Shi Ming Hu Awards, initiated by alumni
in [AA]2 and CASB after Prof. Hu's passing to honor how
important she had been as CASB’s advisor for over 25 years.
It is handled by China Studies at the link above. Info on

It includes a link to the China Night presentation when she
retired. One award is for an entering freshman, one for a
student concentrating in China Studies, and one for student
leadership in an Asian interest club.

The $700 Vinny Johnsingh Scholarship goes to a student who
demonstrates the potential and promise of contribution to
the fostering of a better understanding of the Indian
civilization.
Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship

The $1000 Lin Scholarship for Asian immigrants was
established by the Asian Pacific American Association at
Brookhaven National Laboratory to honor the late Dr. Lin, a
distinguished scientist there. Award is for an Asian
immigrant graduate student at a college or university on LI
(Nassau/Suffolk) in Environmental & Energy Technology,
Biology, or Chemistry.

The $500 Moore Award in International and Religious Studies
goes to a student who shows promise of contributing to the
fostering of international understanding or the appreciation

The $500 Meyer
Award for Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is given to a
student whose major concentration is pertinent to Middle
Eastern or Asian Studies.

on financial need who contribute to India related activities

JCSB-Canon Essay Contest

The aim of the JCSB-Canon Essay Competition is to promote
awareness and understanding of Japan in the United States,
and to help young Americans broaden their international
horizons. Each year has a different theme. Prize of $1500
for the high school winner and $2000 for the college winner.

Rumor has it this was endowed by a female Asian American SBU
English prof who was denied tenure when it was an all white
male department. She was hired by Iowa U and later chaired
its famous writing program. Open to students in the US and
Canada but encourages students of Asian background.
