OMG - FACEBOOK!
This series began because of discussions over
white guys and Asian girls, exemplified in #11 of the best selling New York Time's book,
Stuff
White People Like - that Asian girls were hot but Asian
guys were not. But with the discussions that produced it in
the Zine office and since the issue came out has come the
realization that things really have changed. Still not
enough or quickly enough for some, especially the younger
males looking for some action. Too quickly for others, like
parents who still want their children to not only marry the
same race, but the same nationality.
So this series continues - the never ending story - with a
new article on an Asian / Black relationship and a humorous
blog about Rice Kings (a.k.a. white guys with Asian girl
festishes). The most important thing to
remember when reading everything is to pay attention to where
stereotypes come into play. Yes, stereotypes have a basis in
fact. What is wrong with them is that often someone is
judged by a stereotype even when it's not applicable to
them. Some Asians do suck at math - like our two editors who
are - believe it or not - Poli Sci majors. Some white guys aren't
into Asian girls. The Zine has one whose been involved for
years because a lot of his friends were in it - and he's
engaged to a white girl and has never dated an Asian one.
So... back in the Zine office, here is where the discussions led -
and bear in mind that the Zine is simply a microcosm
and may or may not be applicable to anything more than the
varied group of students in it.
- Most college guys just want to have sex and don't
care what color the person is. Those not getting any talk
about blue balls and how lucky someone is to get lucky once
a semester. The R-rated photos they sit around salivating
about are all races. Those who are getting it just roll
their eyes or shake their heads in sympathy. And there are a
whole lot of sweet innocent virgins. Far more than you would
imagine.
- Yellow fever, Rice Kings, whatever - read the threads and
groups on Facebook and if white guys have fantasies of Asian
women, just as many Asian guys have fantasies of getting it
on with white women.
- Whether a guy is getting any or not effects their
view of not just whether they are hot or not, but how their
ethnicity is viewed. Those who are getting it are not so
sure Asian guys are not hot, but maybe the problem has more
to do with the attitudes and treatment of dates by those not
getting any. They admit that some Asian
girls refuse to go out with Asian guys because they don't
want a domineering chauvinistic person "like my father."
- Although the girls aren't as verbal about it in discussions,
girls on Facebook are no different than guys.
- But one night stands and committed relationships don't
mean the same thing and that is when race or ethnicity
really enters the picture. Two alumni editors, both Asian,
went out with each other for 3 years. It ended with
graduation and her realization that he was serious when he
said he could never disappoint his grandfather by marrying a
non-Korean. Another alumn editor, in a relationship
with a white girl, hasn't introduced her to his parents. "My
Mom wants me to marry a Viet. Where I am now there aren't
even many Asians, and no Viets, so what am I supposed to
do?" Yet a current editor is Viet, in a relationship with a
Filipino, and both sets of parents are happy. Another alumni
editor has yet to date because he also hasn't met anyone
from his parents province in India, and although only 22
really wants to get married, even an arranged marriage - as
long as she's from that province. Still others have found
partners of the same nationality and only have to view their
peers issues from the sidelines.
