On September 10th the Confucius Institute will welcome Ambassador Keyu Peng of the People's Republic of China for its first Presidential Lecture at the Charles B. Wang Asian American Center.

Consul General Peng is a career diplomat with over thirty-five years of broad international experience and has spent the past five years in the United States. He has been Consul General in New York for the past two years and prior to that was Consul General in San Francisco for three. His international experience has included positions in Malaysia, Pakistan and Zambia, where he was China's ambassador. He was also the Director General of the Department of Consular Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At a time when China holds over $750 billion of United State's debt, making our economies ever more intertwined and interdependent, Sino-American relations have never been more important.

There will be a reception following the talk.

The Confucius Institute is headed by Dean of International Academic Programs William Arens. The Ministry Education of the People’s Republic of China funded Stony Brook to operate a Confucius Institute. In April 2009 there were 328 such institutes worldwide; Stony Brook’s Institute is the first in a New York State institution of higher education. Worldwide, Confucius Institutes promote Chinese language and culture and support local Chinese teaching. The Institute at Stony Brook will house a library of Chinese monographs. Its opening on April 13, 2009, was attended by State Councilor Madame Liu Yan-Dong and Minister of Education Zhou Ji of the People’s Republic of China, as well as by other Chinese and U.S. dignitaries including Consul General Peng and philanthropist Charles B. Wang.
