SBU alumnus Arshad Majid is
the Democratic and Working Families Party
candidate for Nassau County’s 17th
Legislative District. This includes includes
Bethpage, Hicksville, Island Trees,
Levittown, North Massapequa, Plainedge,
South Farmingdale and Syosset.
Arshad got his BS from
Stony Brook. After graduation he worked at
Cold Spring Harbor Lab. A stereotypical
Asian American overachiever, he left
to return to school for two grad degrees -
an MBA in Eco and Finance and a Law degree -
both from St. John's.
Before entering politics Arshad was an
Assistant District Attorney. As a prosecutor
he obtained convictions on cases ranging
from child abuse, computer and credit card
fraud, domestic violence, DWI, elder abuse,
narcotics and violent crimes. He later
became a trial lawyer and civil rights
attorney.
As a pioneer in Mortgage Fraud Litigation,
Arshad initiated groundbreaking federal
litigation and helped promote legislation in
New York to protect all citizens from
financial fraud. As a result of his efforts,
new legislation passed the New York State
Legislature to protect homeowners from
losing their homes to foreclosure as a
result of predatory lending practices and
mortgage scams.
Arshad has been a resident of
Long Island for nearly 25 years and lives in
Farmingdale with his family. He is a member
of the South Asian Softball League. He
speaks on behalf of numerous community based
organizations and inter-faith groups and is
a frequent lecturer on legal, political,
social and economic issues.
There are student groups on campus as well
as alumni supporting Majid's campaign. You
can learn more about him at his campaign
website or walk the district with him to get
to know him first hand. There is information
on helping out below.
