For the New Year (and the Old Year – but I’d rather not
elaborate on that), I vowed to get back on track with my
healthy lifestyle. As I’ve mentioned before, I was
once a frequent flyer to the gym, and a regular patron to
Whole Foods and Waldbaum’s vegan aisles. But with college
came the bastardization of all things disciplinary and
structured, and I soon found myself in the throes of
late-night parties and early-morning walks of shame (just
kidding!).
“But
this year is going to be different,” I swore to myself. This
year – the New Year – I was going to make my current pair of
jeans my current pair of fat jeans instead.
But this
year, Stony Brook managed to one-up me once again.
This year – the New Year – Stony Brook had something new.
And it
wasn’t those dorms that’ll supposedly make Roosevelt
prettier or a building to hold even more torturous Calc
classes –
No.
It was
California Pizza Kitchen.
In place
of SB Subs and “Pizza” (was there any other name for it?),
Roth is now home to not only the Wendy’s, but
California Pizza Kitchen, or CPK for short. The
once-ordinary menu of sandwiches and pizza slices now housed
alleged delicacies like Spaghetti Bolognese and Red Velvet
Cake. So of course, I caved.
Just
once though. Really.
And
although I do miss ordering my regular six-inch South Beach
sub on multi-grain bread (toasted), my mouth instantaneously
salivated at the sight of Thai Pizzas and Chicken Club
Panninis. My mind couldn’t even begin to concoct some of the
somewhat esoteric recipes they had to offer (really – peanut
sauce instead of marinara?).
There’s
something mystifying about that place – it piques to the
palate in ways one could never imagine. I witnessed six
students as they surrounded one piece of Key Lime Pie, and
once forks entered their mouths and cake, well, caked
their sense, you could’ve sworn they just saw The Light.
“CPK is
a godsend. I think I might actually finish my meal points
this semester.”
But
maybe we’re just deprived; maybe we’ve always been aching
for something new. Something novel. Something not comprised
of Asian fusion or forgettable American food. Either way,
although CPK may prove to be the near-bane of my own healthy
existence, I am glad that there’s more diversity to the food
on campus. In a fight to make SBU a little bit happier
(currently ranked
#3 Least Happy Students according to Princeton Review),
it seems the way to students’ hearts is through their
stomachs.
Or to
mine at least – granted you don’t engorge it, too.
