Kim Hardiman
The alumna who gave
Stony Brook one of it's
few traditions... for
almost 30 of SBU's 51
years, students have
walked on her art

Alumna artist Kim Hardiman dancing Chinese ribbon dance when she returned for SBU's 40th Anniversary and the dedication of the Zebra Path as an SBU tradition.

When the press release arrived that the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate had voted to get the Zebra Path restored to its original colors, E-Zine contacted Kim Hardiman, the artist who designed the walkway, for her reaction. Kim is now an ESL professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. As expected, given how she felt when it was repainted candy cane colors, she is delighted it is being restored.

Kim sent copies of the original articles about the work from the New York Times, Statesman, and Happenings. She also sent the photo above of her dancing on the Zebra Path when the SB Alumni Association dedicated it with a plaque during the University's 40th Anniversary celebration. Students who were not even born when Kim painted the Zebra Path have one thing in common with every alumn who has gone to SB since 1981 - they very literally walked the same walk.

Public art is an ancient concept but in 1981 it was new to Stony Brook. Art Department Professor Mel Pekarsky obtained grants and permission for his students to enliven the campus. This New York Times article gives a good description of its value - to the artist and the campus. Click on the photo to read about all the projects - of which the Zebra Path is the only one remaining.
