Free this Wednesday, March 24th, from 7 to 10 PM?
Come check out JSO’s “Japan Night” at SAC Ballroom B!
JSO, the
Japanese Student Organization, will give Stony Brook a true taste of
Japanese culture this week. The theme is まつり,
pronounced “Mat-su-ri”, which means festival in Japanese. Matsuri
are quite common and popular in Japan; there are many held
throughout the year, each with their own unique atmosphere. This
large scale event is meant to have everyone celebrate and have fun
together.
JSO has worked hard to accurately recreate the setting of a true
Japanese festival, complete with a carnival of games and prizes,
performances, and authentic Japanese food from Miller Place’s own
Benten. When asked about their location of choice, President
Mitsuru Kakuda stated, “We purposely chose the smaller SAC Ballroom
B…because [we] wanted to take advantage of the small space to create
an atmosphere of a real festival, [where] the room will be packed
with many people,” in a similar manner to how Japanese festivals
today often overflow with the hustle and bustle of people seeking to
win cute prizes or snatch delectable pieces of Matsuri-cuisine.
But! – if free
food, games and prizes aren’t enough to convince your desires to
come, JSO has also organized live entertainment for the night too!
Giving the traditional concept of “Matsuri” a more modernized twist,
many of JSO’s students will be performing songs throughout the
night, with genres ranging from contemporary Jpop to traditional
Japanese drumming.
“We are hoping
that students become more interested in Japanese culture after
attending Japan Night,” says Kakuda. So get your festival-face on
and come to Japan Night this Wednesday!
