On April 13th, at 9:05pm, Shubo Lin, 20, from Shenyang,
China, was trying to cross Nichol's Road / 97 at Stony Brook
University South Drive near the Medical Center. As was his
daily practice, Lin would study late on campus before
walking home. While no one can be sure of what happened, a
car hit Lin, he was then hit by a second car, and a third
and possibly more cars ran over him but did not stop. The
first two motorists called police, who responded along with
SBVAC, the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Lin was
pronounced dead at the scene.
Lin did not have ID on him. First responders were unable to
tell his gender due to the force of the collisions. The
speed limit on Nichol's Road is 50 miles per hour, which
motorists often exceed, especially at night. It took another
two days before Lin was fully identified.
Suffolk County Police issued a bulletin to try to find the
third driver, who came forward a few days later. No charges
were filed against any of the drivers as it appears
to have been a tragic accident. Lin was wearing a black
jacket on a dark night, crossing a dangerous intersection.
Lin's American relatives met with University officials to
make arrangements once the body was identified. A
transfer student from China Medical University, Lin was a
first semester student in IEC, the Intensive English Center.
A memorial wall was made in IEC, E-5320, on the 5th floor of
the Melville Library, for students and staff who knew Shubo
to write their thoughts. It will be sent to Shubo's parents
who are obviously devastated at losing their only child.
