IS AMERICA TOO
brutal rape and murder of a young women in India became a
global symbol for how too often women are abused, and opened
up a discussion on attitudes towards women in a way that had
not existed before.
2012 Delhi Gang Rape :
It coincidentally occurred at a time
in the US when a young teenager was also abused and the acts
against her videotaped and sent out over social media. In
the US, it turned the conversation from a discussion about
"others" to a sorely needed discussion about "us". One in
five American women are raped in their lifetime.
2012 Steubenville High School Rape:
On college campuses, not only is the
rate among the highest, it has traditionally been the most
covered up to protect college's reputations. In January
2014, the White House released a
report and created The White House Task Force on Protecting
Students From Sexual Assault. Some of it's objectives are
- Provide colleges with evidence-based best practices for
preventing and responding to rape and sexual assault.
- Make sure institutions "comply fully" with their legal
obligations in the area.
- Broaden public awareness of individual colleges'
compliance with relevant laws.
